Paul speaks of revelation:. For I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ. Gal ESV. In this context, Paul is demonstrating the independent and authentic nature of his preaching, in contrast to those that were troubling the Galatian Christians There are several points of interest in this passage contributing to an appropriate understanding of revelation.
Furthermore, Galatians gives us three points regarding the nature of revelation. Paul writes to Timothy the following words:. But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.
All Scripture is breathed by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.
The word has often been translated as inspired, an English word that needs some clarification as to its origin. Jack P. Nida and J. Although revelation and inspiration overlap in some aspects in their meaning, it is important to keep them distinct. Furthermore, there are examples where Paul quotes poets Aratus in Acts , playrights Menander in 1 Cor , and philosophers Epimenides in Tit Inspiration secures that prophetic writers used non-biblical literature —-as noted above-— correctly.
It is vital to reflect upon the fact that what God had his prophets preach, became the substance of what God had his prophets pen Isa For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
The Scriptures are God-given, produced through the guiding hand of God into an unchangeable and enduring format —-the written. It is better that one man should perish than that a nation should dwindle and perish in unbelief.
There is more there in the chapter, but this illustrates the point. When Nephi hesitated because he had no desire to kill someone, the Holy Ghost explained why he needed to get the plates to preserve his people. Another example that illustrates a difference between these concepts is in 2 Nephi In verse one, Nephi mentions the Holy Ghost, but in verse two the Holy Spirit showing they are two separate things. And now I, Nephi, cannot write all the things which were taught among my people; neither am I mighty in writing, like unto speaking; for when a man speaketh by the power of the Holy Ghost the power of the Holy Ghost carrieth it unto the hearts of the children of men.
But behold, there are many that harden their hearts against the Holy Spirit , that it hath no place in them; wherefore, they cast many things away which are written and esteem them as things of naught. All through the scriptures we see examples of both inspiration or revelation though sometimes they are tricky to distinguish.
For example, the story of Oliver Cowdery coming to help Joseph with the work of translation. If it had not been so, thou wouldst not have come to the place where thou art at this time. That was inspiration to be led there. However, it says Oliver was enlightened and received instruction which sounds like revelation. Both inspiration and revelation are enlightening because they are divine instructions.
Both come through the Holy Spirit, but the revelations of the Holy Ghost are more powerful and enlightening. He used that knowledge to show the king the powers that come from God Alma Then in the category dropdown, check the box that says article.

Maybe an experience where you just ended up at the right place at the right time? I have a hunch that those moments are much more common in our daily lives than we ever realize. Inspiration is often referred to by church leaders as revelation because, indeed, it can be categorized as a type of revelation. For example, in the following video featuring Elder David A. Bednar of The Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, he likens one form of revelation to a gradual sunrise. Elder Scott might more specifically define this as inspiration, as Elder Bednar then addresses.
