Redevelopment In the late s it was decided that Brisbane needed a state of the art football stadium, and after much debate about the location, Lang Park now known as Suncorp Stadium was chosen as the site.
Named Lang Park after Reverend John Dunmore Lang, who had been instrumental in bringing immigrants to Brisbane in the mid 19th century, the site held multiple sports facilities including cycling and athletics tracks. From the s onwards soccer was regularly played at the ground. In , the ground turned into an actual stadium with the construction of the Frank Burke Stand and stopped being a public recreational facility. In those decades, the stadium was mainly used for rugby and soccer.
In the late s, plans were made by the city of Brisbane for a state-of-the-art stadium that was to replace Lang Park, though parts of the new Grandstand were incorporated in the designs of the new stadium.
